Surf Education Academy (SEA) hosted a sold out International Surfing Association (ISA) Surf and SUP Development Workshop in San Diego, California on March 18-21, providing the proper skills and safety training necessary to the people who will educate the future prospects of our sport.

The workshop consisted of an ISA Surf Level 1 Course, presented by Bird’s Surf Shed, which was also the iconic venue where the workshop took place, as well as an ISA SUP Flat Water Course, presented by The SUP Connection. ISA Course Presenters, Sean Brody and Jarrod Covington, brought the eager group of seasoned Surf and SUP Instructors up to speed on the systematic approach to safety and global best practices.

The Surfing Development Workshop saw a gathering of early adopters and forward thinkers within the surfing community, all looking to elevate the professionalism in the Surf and SUP instruction industry. The eclectic crew of 28 participants in the courses ranged from prestigious university professors and program directors to Baja Big-wave Chargers, Surf Team Captains, Jr. Lifeguard Directors, local SUP providers, and other surf enthusiasts.

Each Course consisted of theoretical work in a classroom setting (in this case Bird’s Surf Shed) along with practical time in and on the water. The ISA Surf Level 1 Course practical components were held in peaky 2-3 ft. surf in Pacific Beach, where the participants made the most of the conditions. The SUP Connection facilities at Liberty Station made the perfect venue for the ISA SUP Flat Water Course and their staff took the opportunity to get certified as well, sharpening their skills in this fast-growing industry.

The two courses were amazing experiences for everyone involved and could not have been done without the help of Bareback Grill, Nomad Donuts and Guayaki Organic Brand Yerba Mate.
