Kommetjie, Cape Town – South African team captain Michael February (Kommetjie) surfed his way to victory this weekend in the premier Open division at the first of three Quiksilver Get Free events for 2015.
February was a clear standout throughout the Surfing South Africa sanctioned event and looked very comfortable competing in great three foot surf at his local surf break where his radical manoeuvres and flowing surfing proved too good for his opponents.
Steven Sawyer (Jeffreys Bay) also produced a great display of surfing to finish second while Davey Brand (Kommetjie) and Llewellyn Whittaker (Mossel Bay) both performed well to came third and fourth respectively.
February was clearly very happy with his win and thanked his family for all their support, “I haven’t won an event in a while so it feels really good to take this one The waves were tricky at times but the ocean delivered when it counted most and all the finalists stepped it up. I’d like to thank my family and sponsors for all the support,” said the elated winner at the awards ceremony.
The winner earned himself R8 000 in cash, a DRFIT action camera and some valuable points on the Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour points for his efforts.
In the U20 division current SA Junior Team member Matt McGillivray (Jeffreys Bay) secured victory in the dying minutes of the heat edging Jerry Van Wyk (Jeffreys Bay) into second place. Talented double finalists Jake Elkington (Kommetjie) and current U15 SA Champion and SA Junior Team member Adin Masencamp (Strand) were third and fourth respectively.
Masencamp then went on to dominate the U16 Final posting 9.25 points out of a possible 10 on his opening ride which saw him claim the title in style ahead of SA Junior team mate Joshe Faulkner (Jeffreys Bay). Jake Elkington and fellow Kommetjie surfer Ethan Fletcher were third and fourth respectively.
Event sponsors Quiksilver were very happy with the opening event of their series, “Cape Town can be a very tricky venue to run events but we’re pretty happy with how the first event of our series played out. The weather was great, the locals came out to watch and the surf came alive when it counted most. We’re pretty excited for the next two events in Umhlanga Rocks and Port Alfred”, said Quiksilver’s marketing manager Dane Patterson.
