ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification Information and Course Requirements

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND COURSE INFORMATION:

ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Course includes the following areas: 

  • Course Theory in ISA Adaptive Surfing Instructor Course Manual to be delivered in full by an ISA Adaptive Surfing Course Presenter
  • Course Videos featuring coaching tips from top international World Para Surfing athletes and experts
  • Practical Assessments

Course Competencies:

All course participants must demonstrate competencies to their approved ISA Adaptive Surf Course Presenter in the following core areas to obtain certification:

  • Transfer Skills
  • Proper Communication
  • Tandem Surfing Skills
  • Ability to Work in a Team
  • Ability to Act Safely and Responsibly with Adaptive Surfing participants
  • Understanding of safeguarding and data protection requirements

 

The ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification is broken down into the following levels:

Full ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor:

This is for instructors that are working in a surf school or professional setting instructing Adaptive Surfing. This is also for leaders of Adaptive Surfing Organizations or Adaptive Surf Therapy Organizations. 

In order to achieve the Full ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification the participant must achieve the following:

  • Full attendance of the ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Course and passing of all competencies
  • Valid ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor Certification – achieved via the ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor Course 
  • Valid Water Safety/Lifesaving award – equivalent of the ISA/ILS Water Safety Award or National Lifesaving award (inquire with your ISA Course Presenter)

The ISA Certified Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification achieved via this course is renewable every three years and a valid ISA Level 1 and water safety award is required to maintain certification.

 

ISA Volunteer Adaptive Surf Instructor:

This is for instructors that are working with Adaptive Surfing Organizations or Adaptive Surf Therapy Organizations in a voluntary capacity. Instructors with this certification are recommended to also obtain an ISA Surf Level 1 Certification and a water safety award to improve their abilities as an instructor and ensure the maximum level of safety and quality while instructing. 

In order to achieve the ISA Adaptive Surf Volunteer Instructor Certification the participant must achieve full attendance of the ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Course and passing of all competencies

The ISA Volunteer Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification achieved via this course is renewable every three years and a valid ISA Level 1 and water safety award is recommended to maintain certification.

 

ISA Adaptive Surf Volunteer:

This is for volunteers that are working with Adaptive Surfing Organizations or Adaptive Surf Therapy Organizations. This is a condensed course to ensure that those volunteering are trained at a basic level in the necessary safety and communication needed for assisting with Adaptive Surf Instruction.

In order to achieve the ISA Adaptive Surf Volunteer Certification the participant must achieve full attendance of the ISA Adaptive Surf Volunteer Course and passing of all competencies. Adaptive Surf Volunteers must work under the supervision of Adaptive Surf Instructors.

The ISA Adaptive Surf Volunteer Certification achieved via this course is renewable every three years and a valid ISA Level 1 and water safety award is recommended to maintain certification.

Course Costs:

Course Organizers will charge a fee of approximately $200-$300 USD per course participant unless an alternate amount has been agreed upon with the ISA in advance.

The ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Registration Fee is $100 USD which includes the international ISA Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification valid for three years.
