The country’s top surfers will be heading to the Hawkes Bay this Labour Weekend for the Backdoor BayBash surfing event which will be held on 25th – 26th October.

The Backdoor BayBash marks the first nationally sanctioned Open Men’s and Women’s event held in the region. The event allows the region’s top surfers the chance to compete against the best in New Zealand without having to travel, giving them a good competitive advantage.

The event includes divisions for male and female age group surfers as well making the long weekend event a real spectacle.

“We are stoked to be able to bring a big surfing event back to the Bay” said Backdoor founder Geoff Hutchison. “Backdoor have been part of the retail scene in the Hawkes Bay for a few years now and it is good to be able to put back into the local surfing community” he added.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule echoed similar sentiments about the event “I am delighted that this nationally sanctioned surf event will come to the Hastings District for the first time. I am sure that the surf conditions will offer a great challenge to the competitors while our sun drenched beaches will be an excellent place to relax between surfs. I see this as a real opportunity to build a strong and lasting relationship with the surfing fraternity from around New Zealand.”

The Backdoor BayBash is an extension of the successful Backdoor GromBash events that have been held at Raglan for the past two years. The event is the final national event of the year for all competitors. This means that final rating points across the seven divisions being contested will be highly sought after with several close title races on the line.

But for the local surfers it will be about competing with the top surfers in New Zealand, showing off the amazing coastline and having a fun filled weekend.

Saturday night will feature a competitors skate night at Skatezone in Napier. There will be a free BBQ for all competitors and their families as part of the night and everyone is encouraged to join in.

Surfing action will take place from 8:00am – 5:00pm daily on Saturday and Sunday with a call on the event venue made first thing each morning.
