3 February 2016, Manila-Philippines: For all you Single (or non-Single) and Unattached (or Attached) surfing and beach party fans, coming up this Valentine’s weekend from February 11-13 is an exciting and unique weekend of fun, sun, music, free beach parties and classic longboard competition at Coast Thru Life’s 4th annual Single & Unattached Classic Single Fin Invitational Longboarding contest, presented this year by New Era Hat Philippines.
This event will be held for three days from February 11-13 at the northern Philippines most popular beach town of San Juan in La Union, just a few hours drive north of the bustling capital city of Manila, with a mixed field of international and local traditional longboard surfers and fans gathering for two days of classic single fin longboarding competition and fun free beach party entertainment.
The Single & Unattached moniker is a word play on the rules of this unique competition, as the surfboard must be a 9 foot or longer “log” with only a Single fin (no other fins or fin plugs) and soft rails, and the competitor is not allowed to wear a leash (legrope) so is Unattached from the surfboard.
There will be three divisions of competitions, Men’s, Women’s, and Tiny Toes (age 17 and under) with potentially the first “8 foot and under” Expression Session if time and conditions permit. Cash and products from the many supporting sponsors will be awarded to the winners and finalists, as well as special categories and prizes to be announced.
International invitees from Australia, Japan, Hawaii, the United States, and Indonesia have already confirmed, including 2014 Single & Unattached winner Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat from Batu Karas, West Java, and of course last year’s winners, La Union locals Benito Nerida, Daisy Valdez, and RJ Lopez.
“It’s going to be super exciting with the mix of international and local crew,” says event co-founder Buji Libarnes. “We’re delighted to see that Mencos, the men’s champ from two years ago, will be joining the fun again so he can treat the crowds to the West Java flare that this extraordinarily talented surfer displays in the water. In addition, we’ve got an amazing lineup of bands and DJ’s for the free beach concert as well, from the soul stomping funk of Single & Unattached mainstay Flippin Soul Stompers, the Pinoy reggae/ska tunes of Singkupado Sound System, the blues rock of Blue Jean Junkies, and on to the world class dance music beats from multi DMC World DJ champion DJ Sir Scratch and DJ Kimozave, the Official DJ for the King of Pinoy Rap Francis M, and more!”
A first time presenting sponsor of the event this year and the main organizer is New Era Cap Philippines, and when asked what attracted him to get involved with the event, President Jonathan Lau replied, “”We love this lifestyle, and we want to see this event grow every year. It represents taking time out to relax and enjoy nature, it represents fun. When you hit the beach you drop your pretenses and you just enjoy. We also love to support indie artists such as musicians and athletes, so this is right in line with our values. Longboard surfing is an art. Between the music and the surfing, we just want people to chill and have fun!”
And have fun we will! See attached e-poster for event rundown, and get yourself to La Union on February 11, prepared to drop everything, relax, surf, party, dance and feel the tropical beach vibe all weekend long…who knows, you just might find your new Valentine if you’re currently Single & Unattached! And if you’re Un-Single & Attached, you’ll have a head start on those singles by already having an epic Valentines Day weekend on tap to enjoy with your other half.
