Barrigada, Guam –– Saturday, January 17, 2015) Guahan Napu Inc., the local non-profit federation of surfers and body-boarders today announces February 28 as the date for the eighth annual Rick’s Reef Classic competition. The holdover dates are March 14 and 28 if wave conditions are not conducive on February 28. The event venue is hosted by Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort.
In addition to last year’s categories of junior short board surfing for youths ages 13 to 17, open short board surfing, open long-boarding and open body-boarding, contest organizers are adding a new category of masters’ short board surfing for those age 50 and above. “We’re introducing the masters’ short board surfing category this year by popular demand to give those over 50s surfers a chance to compete on a more level playing field,” says Willi Byerly, Guahan Napu Inc.’s president and contest director. “We’re also retaining the stand up paddling competition category which was initiated in 2014 as a new discipline of surfing under the guidelines of the International Surfing Association.” All competition categories are gender neutral. Contest fee is $30 per competitor per category and includes an event T-shirt plus one-year association membership.
The association is holding a meeting for interested contestants on Thursday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fishermen’s Co-Op in Hagatna. A refresher judging clinic will be held February 25. Guahan Napu Inc. now has a cohort of 12 ISA-certified judges. Gregg Ikehara, the federation’s vice-president, was most recently elevated to ISA-certified Level 3 judge while Byerly was certified as a Level 2 judge.
