After the massive success and following in the Davidoff Pro Longboard event at the Boardmasters festival in Newquay last week, Ben “skindog” Skinner and Adam Griffiths have been selected to surf for SurfingGB in the first ever ISA World Longboarding Championship in Peru.

The two best Juniors, Ben Bates (17), Raife Gaskell (17) and Britain’s number one female Claire Smail have also been selected through the Rankings of the British Longboard Union events after guidance from SurfingGB and the ISA.

Team Members

  • Ben Skinner (Open Men Longboard)
  • Adam Griffiths (Open Men Longboard)
  • Claire Smail (Open Women Longboard)
  • Ben Bates/Raife Gaskell (Junior Under-18 Boy or Girl)

They will head out to Huanchaco Beach in Peru to compete against the best longboarders from around the world in the surfing equivalent of the Olympic games on the hunt for Britain’s first ever world Gold medalist in the ISA.

This is a massive opportunity to show the high level of longboarding that the UK has to offer. Ben and Adam are currently ranked number 1 and 2 in Europe and the quality of the rest of the team puts them in a strong position to bring back Britain’s first medals from this global event.

Selected team manager and founder of the British Longboard Union, Robert “Minnow” Green said “This is a major opportunity for British surfing and I am proud and honoured to have been chosen by the team as manager. I cannot wait to support them all the way. Unfortunately although we are a National team we have to fund ourselves to travel and compete in Peru for Britain”.

“We are grateful to have the Joe Way Appeal kick starting our fundraising with their event”.

The “Endless Fundraiser” will be at Fistral beach bar on Thursday the 5th September and will start at 6pm with a demonstration from Newquay surf life savers, free family beach tennis, free Fistral rangers session, face painting and an opportunity to surf along side some of the British team including Ben Skinner and Adam Griffiths.

Newquay musician Joe Hurworth will be playing at the beach bar from 7pm and with a great raffle there will be plenty to do for all the family and for adults as the evening progresses.

Matt Way from the Joe Way Appeal said “Ben, Adam and the surfing community have helped us raise over £117k for 20 charities over the last five years so we are delighted to finally be able to offer some help to these guys. Britain is an island with a long history of longboarding so it would be unthinkable not to have representation at this global event showing off British talent”.

Minnow added “We would like to appeal to anyone who has an interest or a way of helping our team succeed in funding this amazing event. We have a very good chance of making a podium finish in all divisions and putting SurfingGB as a team on the podium for the first time ever. There is a huge branding opportunity with our team kit as well as pre and post media attention”.
