PORTUGAL TO HOST 2016 VISSLA ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE AZORES

ISA Brings the World’s Premiere Junior Surfers to Europe, September 17-24, 2016

The International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Portuguese Surfing Federation are excited to announce the 2016 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will take place in the Azores islands of Portugal.

The competition will be held at Praia do Monte Verde, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island from September 17-24, bringing the competition back to Europe for the first time since 2008 when it was held in France.

João Aranha, Portuguese Surfing Federation President, and Fernando Aguerre, ISA President, made the announcement on Sunday during the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Oceanside, California.

“I am thrilled about bringing the VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship back to Europe,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “The Azores is a perfect surf destination with beautiful scenery and epic waves. With the support of the Portuguese Surfing Federation, I look forward to another amazing edition of this ISA World Championship.”

“It’s an honor to host this ISA World Championship in our country,” said João Aranha, President of the Portuguese Surfing Federation. “We know that surfing reaches large audiences around the world and we are excited to showcase our hospitality, warmth and incredible waves in the Azores, which will be seen by hundreds of thousands on the computer and television screens globally.”

The 2015 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is currently taking place in Oceanside, California from October 11-18. The world’s best junior surfers are competing for Gold Medals and the coveted World Team Champion Trophy.

The schedule of competition is as follows:

    • October 12-18 from 7am-5pm (PST) – Competition taking place at Oceanside Pier
    • Sunday, October 18 – Closing Ceremony at the Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre
