Federico Pilurzu is situated in position 99 of the WQS and is the best Hispanic representative in this demanding tour. Looking forward to the last four stops of 2007, Fede is prepared to give his best and continue climbing the ranks in the second category of the ASP.
To finish off this year’s international events, Federico will participate in the O' Neill World Cup, on Sunset Beach, in Oahu, Hawaii.
The event is starred as a category 6 and will take place from November 25 to December 6.
After his performance in the O’ Neill Coldwater Classic, held in the cold water of Santa Cruz, California, the rising Costa Rican surfer stayed to chat with Javier Castro, a journalist for the Costa Rican Surfing Federation.
What does it mean to you to compete at such a demanding international level?
-For me, to compete at this level is my dream, I have been training since I was 14 years old, and each year I get a little better… It is a very hard tour and little by little I am moving up.
The water is really cold and affects surfers, what do you do to adapt to it?
-The water is cold but I have a great Xcell wetsuit. Besides, I have been in California for a week practicing and getting used to the water.
What do you think of your level in this competition?
- It is good, the level (of the competition) is high but anything is possible. My objective is to score the highest I can, one heat at a time.
What is the most difficult part of the upcoming heats?
-The most difficult is to catch the waves, because the waves break in only one place and everyone is fighting for them.
What opponents are going to be a challenge?
-Among the best are Jordy Smith, Bret Simpson, Shaun Ward and a few more.
How do you feel now that you have passed to the fourth round?
-Really good, the first heat is the one that is the most nerve racking, but after passing this, one enters a rhythm and feels better. Now I am concentrated on the next heat. One at a same time, and I hope that all goes well step by step.
