Latin Tour spreads its wings in Mexico

For the first time in history Mexico will carry out a stage of the Latin American Surfing Tour.  El Palmar Beach, Ixtapa will see three days of action in the Pacific Ocean, September 6-9.  The IXTAPA – ZIHUANTANEJO LATIN PRO 2007 will have a six star category and it will deliver 1000 points and US$ 17.000,00 in awards.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is located in the northeastern part of Guerrero State and it’s part of the tropical Pacific coast known as the “Mexican Shore”. It’s  225 km/140 miles away from the famous Mexican resort town, Acapulco near the south.

Zihuatanejo, formally known as Zihuatanejo de Azueta, is a Mexican harbor located in Costa Grande region, Guerrero State in Jose Azueta Council. It’s also known as Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo and is a tourist destination that combines the luxury and modernity of Ixtapa, with the tradition and tranquility of the little fishing harbor of Zihuatanejo.

El Palmar is Ixtapa’s main beach. It is a broad sand area of 2.37 kilometers (1.5 miles). It’s known as “Ixtapa hotel area” because most of the hotels overlooking the beach are there. There is a place called “Las Escolleras” (“The Breakwaters”) where a wave with the same name bursts.

This wave originates in a stone jetty (breakwater). From there the main wave, a right with sand bottom bursts. At the same time there is a left parallel to that right. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are excellent places for surfing and for Longboard. The water is warm year round so the use of a wetsuit is not necessary.
