TomÁs Villegas Espejo rewarded by the Mayor for his performance in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships
Chilean Surfer Tomás Villegas Espejo, 14 years old, was rewarded by La Serena Mayor because he earned the 43rd place in Costa de Caparica, Portugal during the last Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.
The young surfer is attending his first year of high school at an English Catholic School and has been practicing surfing for six years now. Since then he has placed 1st eight times in regional and national tournaments. This year he placed first in the Grommet division in the RIP CURL PRO Portofino.
Mayor Raul Saldivar expressed the Council acknowledgment to the surfer. He also pushed him to continue practicing surfing and to keep growing as a sportsman.
“I would like the authorities to know more about surfing because there are some very good surfers around here. More than 30 countries participated in the World Championship in Portugal and we ended up in 12th place. We could still do a lot better. Authorities could support surfing by sponsoring surfers, providing equipment or travel tickets because it’s very important for a surfer to know and practice surfing in different kinds of waves”, Tomas pointed out after he received Mr. Mayor’s acknowledgement.
