Pico Alto: Still waiting for waves

At press time, the traditional competition that gathers the best big wave riders of Peru has not yet begun. The "BILLABONG PICO ALTO INVITACIONAL 2007" takes place every year in the giant waves at Pico Alto.

The event organizers and media in Peru have not ruled out the possibility of holding it. They keep waiting for better conditions for the competition.

An event with history
The famous Pico Alto’s big wave is located almost one kilometre out to sea, at the 44th km of the South Panamericana highway in Punta Hermosa. This impressive wave is famous because of its great strength and size. For many people it’s considered the best wave in Peru. Most of the people ride the rights and they can reach 8 or 10 meters high. This wave has it all: it’s well shaped, strong, giant, long, and, sometimes, it’s very aggressive and with tubular sessions.

The history of this classic event began in 2003 when the 30 best “big riders” from Peru gathered and competed for U$S 3,500. If the waves reach the size the organizers expect for this year there will be U$S 10,500 and the glory of having won the most important big wave event of South America.
