David Rutherford the best local on the ESPN Surfing X Games XIII

Mexico was the scene for the ESPN Surfing X Games XIII. The Games took place in Zicatela, Puerto Escondido. USA team beat The World team by only 0.75 points on the Men division.

Chris Ward was awarded the “most valuable player” for USA when he got the first 10 in X Games history for an amazing stand up tube that he rode with arms up. That same tube also gave him the “best wave” award of the competition.

Local X Games

This year Los Tiburones won the local challenge beating Las Malaguas for 52 to 47.

The winning Sharks team was formed by: David Rutherford, Christian Corzo, Checo Ramirez, Adrian Rodriguez and Chano Muñoz. The coaches were Martin Potter, Barton Lynch and Layne Beachley.

Las Malaguas were formed by Coco Ramírez, Raul Noyola, Celestino Rodriguez, Yuco Trujillo, Adan Hernandez and Alex Muñoz. As Their coachs were Mike Parsons and Matt Kechele. Arturo Camarillo and Bertín Juárez assisted as reserve players but they didn’t participate.

David Rutherford, who was the captain of the Sharks, was awarded not only with the gold medal as member of the winning team, but also with a place in the all-star competition of the Surfing X Games. Thus, David Rutherford went down in history as the first Mexican surfer who officially participated in the X Games. He was one of the members of Rest of The World team that competed against USA.
