The First Annual Rip Curl Stew Surf Competition Ripped up Cox Bay

Cox Bay in Tofino BC -June 16th & 17th- had a huge turn out with local talent ripping up the beach.

Approximately 85 competitors battled Mother Nature all weekend, and faced a variety of conditions. Starting with no swell and rain Saturday morning it changed to medium swell and sun by the afternoon. A brisk onshore wind with shoulder-high sets started off Sunday, ending the event with the sun shining through the whole awards ceremony.

Our goal for the weekend was to bring the surf culture of Vancouver Island’s past, back to life with a realistic goal – to continue to develop home grown athletes and help them reach world-class level. The end result has exceeded our expectations for the first annual Rip Curl Stew Competition.

So, what do you do when home grown talent is ready to perform at its highest level? You push the competition to 2-days, and the result is unforgettable performances from all the competitors. As Contestants all battled for first place, they showed the crowd what they are really capable of….

The contest featured seven categories- which included open categories for men, women & children, a long board category, a masters over forty category and a expression session - allowing surfers at all levels & ages to showcase their talent.

Entertainment was out of the water as well, games were played to entertain the crowd such as, tug-a-war, teddy bear stands, egg throwing contest and much more. We also served stew matching the theme of the event, and it was the perfect touch considering the weather conditions. Access was free and over $10,000 worth of swag was handed out from Rip Curl & Sponsors.

All eyes and ears however, were focused on the well known athletes that were competing in the expression session on Sunday afternoon. This included Rip Curls very own team rider Christian Moutinho, The Bruhwiler brothers Raph and Sepp, Shannon Brown, Noah Cohen, Pete Devries, CC Unger Mayor, Reid Jackson, Leiah Oke and Isaiah Oke. From Best Air, Best Overall, Best Ride and Best Maneuver. These guys brought this competition to a whole new and exciting level!

Despite the weather the contestants went out and continued to perform as if it was second nature. The competitors enlightened the crowds with there talent and pushed them-selves to unforgettable levels while vying for one of the top spots in the event. However, in the end Noah Cohen and Tamarah Stephens came out of the competition with an unforgettable victory at the first annual Rip Curl Stew.
