The Barena Huanchaco Open, the third stage of the IPD Cup 2011, hosted the finals on March 20. Zapata, Clemente and Chauvel were victorious in their respective categories.
This year Zapata surfed the peak of the Hawaiian season and returned with renewed vigor. His excellent performance earned him top scores for almost every series, classifying him for the finals, where he exceeded himself with a formidable and victorious fight for the first place. Twice-champion of the IPD CUP, Javier Swayne, placed second, while local Juninho Urcia won third and Joaquín del Castillo placed fourth. In order to accelerate the implementation of the Law 27280, which preserves surf breaks, thousands of Peruvian surfers paddled the coast while shouting “this is my wave!” The successful event took place at 3pm on Friday, March 18 at Makaha beach in Miraflores. One of their goals, which they achieved, was to bring together as many surfers, bodyboarders, and aficionados as possible to make an impact and raise awareness of beach preservation.
This year O’Neill will award USD 4,000 to the team that surfs the biggest waves and with the most prowess in Chilca, Peru for the most extreme surfing event of the year.
“Tow-In” distinguishes itself from conventional surfing as a team effort for which individual surfers put their courage, ability, and comradeship to the test. One team member drives the Jet Ski to tow another team member who holds on with a rope. This form of surfing is usually used when the waves are too large and aggressive to enter by paddling power alone.
The months of April and May have been designated as the waiting period for the event. The date will be announced five days beforehand. It is impossible to announce any sooner since precise tide and wind forecasts are essential.
This competition promises to be a great show, as last year’s edition of the same event would indicate. Waves up to six meters high are expected to break very close to the shore.
