Pires close to the WCT
At the closing date of the World Surfing News,
Portuguese-born Tiago
Pires
leads the ASP World Qualifying Series
ranking with 9175 points.
Pires is thus soon to become the first
Portuguese in history to be part of the WCT.
“Everything takes
me to win. It is a wonderful feeling. I
only have to remain concentrated”, commented
Pires in an interview given to press
representatives of the ASP in Europe.
He also commented that the evolution of surfing in
the old continent is slow. But he considers that, after all, the
European surfers confide that they can continue fighting. He finished
the interview saying: “Things
are changing very slowly, but more than one
hopes for. The fact that Mikael Picon and Jeremy
Flores classified to the WCT, contributed
to ending the lack of confidence of the European surfers. I think we
have many Europeans ready to fight from now on.”
Pires was born on March 13, 1980, at the
wave-rich region of Ericeira, Portugal. He has won and reached the
finals of several WQS events; was European
Junior Champion, Runner up at the World Junior Championships in 1998 –
ISA and ASP in 2000. He was crowned as the best rookie at the 2000
Hawaiian Triple Crown, among other results.
He has carried out a great campaign in 2007 and is
in great shape to make history in his home country.
