La Libertad, El Salvador -- Thrilling the hometown crowds, Punta Roca
local Wilber Albarenga won the 2nd annual Quiksilver Pro El Salvador
today. Albarenga’s victory is makes it two years in a row that a surfer
from La Libertad has emerged victorious at the legendary point break
here called Punta Roca. (Last year contest director and lifelong local
Jimmy Rotherham won the event.)
Alberenga, nicknamed “Policia,” was carried up the beach by his
countrymen and he celebrated with his infant son. “I’m so happy.” said
Alberenga. “I want to thank Quiksilver, Bahia, Sprite and all of the
other sponsors. I’m so stoked that a local has won this event again.
This is our home and I wont one of us to win every year.”
Rotherham, injured and out of action this year, was excited to see
childhood friend Albarenga take the win. “I grew up with Wilber and I’m
so proud of him that I want to cry,” said Rotherham. “I’m also so
honored by the presence of so many great international surfers here.
They all surfed so well.”
Finishing second was Peruvian Javier Swain. The smooth goofyfoot
fell behind in the heat when Albarenga found a long right where he
rifled off a series of snaps and floaters and was rewarded with an 8.77
(out 10). Swain then waited outside in the inconsistent surf for a set
wave that never came.
“I fell on a good wave, and Wilber was very consistent,” said Swain.
Despite the loss, Swain was full of praise for the people and waves of
El Salvador. “Punta Roca is a great wave and all of the people here are
so cool. It’s been a really fun contest.”
Finishing equal third were two of Swain’s countrymen, Gabriel
Villaran and Gabriel Aramburu. The surf was 3-4 feet (1 meter) and very
clean throughout the day. The weather was hot and sunny and around two
thousand people came down to the point to watch the action along with
television and print media from the national networks.
