The GB Junior Surf Squad begins its training schedule in preparation for the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in New Zealand in January 2010.

On Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, the squad will assemble at the BSA Headquarters in Fistral Beach for an intense two day training session and mentoring from the GB team coaches. Two weeks later, the squad is off to Hossegor, France for a week sponsored by Calypso and Brittany Ferries.

“These two days are a precursor and an introduction to the type of training we will be covering in France”, says Mike Young, Head Coach. “We will be working with a variety of techniques, including core strength, strength & fitness, mental preparation and of course technical ability and surfing repertoire.”

Along with surf coaches, the BSA will also bring in general fitness coaches who can offer a different style of training to the types of training that the surfers may be used to. “Other sports use techniques, that as well as providing basic exercise, endurance and core strength, are also fun!” says Mark Wesson. “We want to bring this element to the training camps, as it brings variety and enjoyment to the program.”

With financial support from British soft drink company Calypso, producers of leading juicy water brand, Aquajuice 67 and ferry travel provided by Brittany Ferries; the team will travel to Hossegor at the end of the month for a weeklong training camp. There, they will train intensively and avoid the distractions of home. “Getting the team together in this environment is a great way to prepare for the two weeks in New Zealand” said Micah Lester, Assistant Coach. “It allows the team dynamic to build, and gives us enough time to really work on their surfing strengths and weaknesses as well as general fitness. In addition, the break at Hossegor is comparable to that at Piha, NZ, so we can really see how they perform in these conditions.”
