The judges were keen to observe all the talent this young man displayed, who at 18 already stands out as one of the great promises of Venezuelan surfing.
Luis Lanz, of Miranda, was the Silver Medalist, while Enyer Moncada de Vargas won the Bronze.
The Longboard final was electrifying since the best Venezuelan talent in this specialty met face-to-face: Ronald “The Mad” Reyes (Var), Armando Colucci (DC), Francisco “Paiva” Hernández (NE) and the surprising performance by Giovanni “El Chino” Benítez. The competitors obtained Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper respectively.
In the Open Women division, the State District sealed their triumph with the graceful performances by Maria Eugenia Rojas and Yocelin Aldana, who placed 1st and 2nd. They reminded everyone why they are undoubtedly the best female surfers in the country. Young talent Rossany Alvarez from Miranda State, obtained the Bronze Medal, while Adriana “La China” Cano from Vargas State took the Copper.
The Open Men division gave those present a gripping ending. The contenders were Jesús “Portu” Chacón de Vargas, Francisco “Lolo” Bellorin and Giovanni “Chino” Benítez, the last two Vargas State natives, who performed deep carves, cutbacks and other radical maneuvers from their ample repertoire Even at the last minute there was no clear winner.
However, with only 40 seconds left on the clock, “Lolo” Bellorin was positioned first, followed by “Chino” Benitez and “Portu” Chacón.
Giovanni snagged an excellent wave and did two magnificent maneuvers on the wave’s most critical part. With this he managed to move up to 1st place with Bellorin and Chacón trailing.
The few remaining seconds dragged on, until they heard the sound that the heat had ended and “Chino” Benitez was announced as the Gold Medal winner, followed by Bellorin with Silver and Jesús Chacón with Bronze.
