José “Jarita” Gómez rides Pico Alto on a “Caballito de Totora”
Punta Hermosa became a part of the history of Peruvian surfing when José Gomez dominated in a “Caballito de Totora” (weed watercraft used by the ancient Incans) on one of the biggest waves in Latin America: Pico Alto.
After a long waiting period, perfect conditions appeared early in the morning at the powerful wave of Punta Hermosa. Thursday, September 3, was the day history was made. This time, Jarita did not pick his usual board, but one of the oldest surfing watercrafts in the world for surfing. Jarita took it to a local fishing boat where his brother and media professionals looked on in astonishment along with all of the other Peruvians watching the event. They all cheered him on and sent him good vibes.
The valiant surfer tried to take the wave using a tow-in, but it was in vain. He then decided to paddle in on his own, taking the wave of the day. “Jarita” once again gained the applause and admiration not only of those present, but of all Peruvians.
La Herradura is Still Waiting
The Quiksilver Pro La Herradura is still waiting for the perfect conditions to begin. Since it is one of the most anticipated events by lovers of big waves, the waiting period will extend through the end of October.
The contest will distribute prizes adding up to $7,000 dollars and the much-appreciated Ripley Cup. The best Peruvian surfers have been summoned, such as Gabriel Villarán, Javier Swayne, Gabriel Aramburú, Cristóbal de Col, José Gómez, and others.
This year, the Ripley Cup celebrates its fifth anniversary and its main function is to protect the mythical wave of La Herradura that is in danger of destruction.
