100 PIPERS MASTERS - First Masters contest in the history of Uruguay
Words by Eduardo Bolioli
The first surfing Masters event to be held in Uruguay, took place at La
Pedrera´s waves on April 28th, gathering over 30 years old competitors
that were divided in the Masters (30) Grand Masters (40) and a third
category for people who work in the food and beverage industry including
bartenders, waiters and Chefs.
Originally the 100 Pipers Masters was scheduled to be held during Easter
week but, because of lack of good surf it was postponed until the next
weekend with good waves.
Thankfully the main sponsor understood that this was a Men’s contest and
that it would pay off to wait for a good swell, the results were six to
eight foot waves with perfect conditions all day long.
In brief the whole event was a gathering of the old tribe and even
though the competitors didn’t give each other an inch during competition,
there was a great spirit of brotherhood that prevailed during the whole
100 Pipers Masters.
There were a few busted boards and a lot of story telling in between
waves at “El Desplayado”.
Eduardo “Garra” Mendez got the highest scoring wave but unfortunately he
was stopped in quarter finals by an unbeatable Philippe Paullier that
won every single heat including the final.
Under the old slogan “Surf all day, party all night” the 100 Pipers
Masters ended with an unreal awards party, with plenty to eat and drink.
