Fabian Farias wins the X Punta Lobos Ceremonial

Fabian Farias won the 10th edition of the Punta Lobos Ceremonial, which is one of the most important big wave championships of Chile and Latin America. It was the seventh stop of the Chilean National Tour.

The waves broke perfect in the 15 to 20 feet range. More than 50 of the best surfers in the Open, Ladies, Junior and Masters divisions competed.

Farias made it to the top competing against Ramon Navarro, the previous champion who placed second. Navarro couldn’t find his second wave in spite of his efforts on world wide category’s waves. The experienced surfer Fernando Zegers showed a solid performance throughout the entire contest and obtained third place. On the other hand, local Cristian Merello broke his leash in the decisive round, as he did last year in the same event. It made things difficult for him and he placed fourth.

Jessica Anderson was the Ladies’ winner, leaving behind her eternal rival Marianne Lombarda second. Clementina "Chacha" Paz-Soldán and Trinidad Segura earned third and fourth place respectively.

In the Masters division, Reinaldo "Chacha" Ibarra, who broke his board in the Open division and was out of the competition in the third round, took revenge on the Masters, beating Alejandro "Negro" Compte with waves that surprised the more than 1,000 spectators who were in Punta Lobos watching the show. Third place went to Cipres shaper, Marcel Charrier and Alejandro Martínez was fourth.

The youngsters were the ones who received the most applause. Junior León Vicuña rode the tube of the championship; a monster that made people hold their breath seeing Leon emerging and jumping with joy. Jessica Anderson, the only woman in the Junior final, stood out as she also rode a spectacular wave. “To tell you the truth, when I realized the real size of that wave I just wanted to get out of it, I was really scared but it was incredible”, said Jessica. Ignacio Navarro placed third and Sebastián "Tatán" Gutiérrez fourth.

The tenth edition of the Punta Lobos Ceremonial was possible thanks to Rip Curl, Gotcha, Thermoskin, Sticky Bumps, Maui & Sons, FCS, Red Bull.
