Waves of triumph at UCV
Members of the Venezuelan surfing team visited the swimming-pool complex at the Sports Center of the Central Venezuelan University (UCV Spanish Acronym) on June 26th .
The objective of this visit was to instruct the national team on new resistance techniques in moments of pressure. This workshop was administered by renowned apneist Carlos Coste, who apart from specializing in the aforementioned discipline, is also one of Venezuela’s surfing coaches.
The diver instructed more than thirty surfers who aspire to become a part of the team that will compete in the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games 2009 in Playa Hermosa, Jaco, Costa Rica this August.
Preliminary National Team Exercises in Foreign Element
Continuing the overall training that is being carried out by the Technical Staff of the national surfing preliminary team, our tritons and sirens climbed up the “natural lung” of the city of Caracas, the Avila National Park.
Gerhard Weil, the team coach, was in charge of directing the trekking to Sabas Nieves and then continued with a coaching exercise applying Neuro-Linguistic Programming – (NLP) techniques. This consisted in previewing mentally their objectives through the Optimal Flow Ritual Neuro-Synergy technique in order to bind the union, confidence and conviction of the national team. Our athletes visualized specific points on a technical and tactical level in their road towards the world surfing championship in Costa Rica.
Guided by Weil’s instructions, they placed themselves in the logical sequence of situations that they are to undergo, beginning when they board the plane towards their destination, going through the team parade where they wear the traditional “liquiliqui” costume with our tricolor flag undulating, continuing with their respective heats imagining perfect waves, doing radical maneuvers and obtaining magnificent scores, to finally end in the winner’s podium with a possible team Gold Medal leaving Venezuela at the top.
After this, each one of the athletes was interviewed as part of a documentary-type audiovisual that has been in production since the beginning of the training sessions. The day concluded with the normal exercise routine with the assistance of the physical trainer Giussepe Ferri with an innovative stretching and flexibility exercise in which each part of their bodies was elongated.
Although our athletes were in a different environment, they showed great physical aptitude since most of them took from 18 to 27 minutes to climb the peak and one could also observe the great unity they showed as a team. They shared one common goal, which is having the best performance than any other national team in the history of Venezuelan surf.
