The Dirty Lie
Waterkeeper is now featuring the new Save The Waves short film "Keeping Coast" on their excellent multimedia website The Dirty Lie. This entertaining, beautifully designed and educational website features news articles about coal energy and its unavoidable toxic waste problems, as well as numerous short films such as our own Keeping Coast and The Amazing Disappearing Mountains - a beautiful and haunting 2-minute film that chronicles the journey of coal from mountain top to smokestack.
Help us spread the truth behind coal pollution, watch our short films documenting the harsh local reality of coal energy production, and learn more at The Dirty Lie.
Waterkeeper Alliance is a Save The Waves Coalition member and our partner in Chile on the Maule Itata Coastkeeper program. Waterkeeper Alliance is an international grassroots organization that champions clean water and strong communities.
Mermaid Tears At Mavericks
This past Saturday (June 21st) Save The Waves volunteers with the help of Mavericks Surf Ventures got dirty on the beach at Mavericks to celebrate surfing and pristine coastlines, cleaning the beach with our friends and supporters and gathering surveys for the Value of Mavericks Surfonomics study.
On the beach we learned a lot about trash and where it comes from: look closely at the high tide line and you will find the infamous "mermaid's tears" - which we found at Mavericks (see photo) - hundreds and even thousands of tiny pieces of plastic and styrofoam trash that has broken down into pieces and washed onto the beach with the high tide. You can locate the high tide line at any beach, look closely, and you will find this tiny plastic trash that endangers marine life and litters every beach worldwide.
Thousands of waveriders all over the world celebrated International Surfing Day, and we joined this international effort at Pillar Point in front of world famous Mavericks, cleaning the beach and deploying our "Value of Mavericks" study survey of the public beachgoers which will be used to study the value of the wave and its beach and what it brings to the community.
