FIRST STOP OF THE NATIONAL SURFING TOUR
After two days of hard competition, the first stage of the National Surfing Tour finished last April 11 in the afternoon. The event was sponsored by Red Bull, Tavarua Surf Shop and Skull Candy.
This event, which gathered together surfers from all over the country, took place on Easter Friday and Saturday in the famous beach Casa Grande at Tayrona Park. Hundreds of the tourists camping in the beaches of this nature reserve had the chance to watch a sport show of great level.
Even though the conditions were not the best during the first day of competitions (the championship began with waves of 1.70 meters high and it finished on Saturday with waves of 2.5 meters), the surfers scored the first points of the championship that will continue around the main beaches of the country such as Cartagena, San Andrés, Isla, Puerto Colombia and probably Nuquí, in the Pacific coast.
The divisions were “Junior Pro” (under 20 years of age), “Open” (open division) and “Teams”, with the following results:
Junior Pro
1st place: Simón Salazar (Manizales)
2nd place: Juan David Granados (Bogotá)
3rd place: Daniel Olmos (Barranquilla)
4th place: Carlos Vergara (Santa Marta)
Open
1st place: Juan “El Chamo” Garantón (Caracas, Venezuela)
2nd place: Juan Carlos “Canchito” de Luque (Puerto Colombia)
3rd place: Simón Salazar (Manizales)
4th place: Juan David Granados (Bogotá)
Teams competition
1st place: Canchito´s pro (Juan Carlos de Luque, Juan David Granados, Daniel Olmos)
2nd place: Tavarua Surf
3rd place: Los Guajiros
Expresion Sesion
1st place: Juan Carlos De Luque
Juan Garanton was surprised when he heard that he had won in the Open division. He has lived in Barranquilla for nine years. With this result, he is now in the first position of the national championship.
Juan Carlos de Luque, better known as “Canchito”, was dissapointed with the results as he surfed one of his best days; winning in the “Teams” and “Best Move” divisions. The last division was a fourth competition the judges created believing it was a chance for surfers to show off their skills.
The second stage of the championship will take place at Pradomar Beach in Puerto Colombia in the middle of June.
