San Bartolo crowned its King and Queen
San Bartolo beach, Peru, was the scene of the 2009 Movistar Cup for men and women, held from January 23-25 and January 31 to February 1, respectively.

This event brought together the best Latin American surfers, and the accumulated scores added to the ASP and ALAS tours.

The men came first and the local athlete, Sebastian Alarcon, had a hard final against the present Latin Champion, Rafael “Nono” Pereira (VEN).  The Peruvian showed that he knew his beach very well, but Pereira pulled out his secret weapon, an aerial, which gave him an almost perfect 9 and the event’s first place.

On the second weekend, Latin American beauties demonstrated delicate and radical surfing.  A great crowd went to San Bartolo to watch this event, because Queen Sofia (Mulanovich) and Princess Anali Gomes, were both competing on behalf of their birthplace.  Both clashed in a very hard-fought final.  Sofia obtained the first position but Analí got most of the applause, for the excellent potential she showed in the waves of San Bartolo.

Movistar Talent Incubator
Once again, Movistar is seeking new talents.  For this reason, it created the “Movistar Talent Incubator,” the first circuit for non-ranked boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 categories.

A new category was added to the event: the tandem, in which the little talents will have the opportunity to surf and compete with their fathers or teachers.  Surfing schools are essential for this category, since the teachers, parents and trainees must create competition strategies, know the beach well and carry out team work.

The winner of each event will take home a Wayo Whilar board and to determine the absolute Champion, the ranking will only consider the circuit’s two best scores.

In this way, Movistar is present in Peruvian surfing and reasserts its support to the wave-riding sport.

Beneath, the dates of the Movistar Talent Incubator Circuit:
February 21-22  Cerro Azul beach
March 07-08       Barranquito beach
March 21-22       Makaha beach
