2006 ISA World Junior Surfing Champion Julian Wilson
Today, twenty-year-old Aussie Julian Wilson, one of the best surfers in the planet thanks to his precise, innovative and explosive surfing, he enjoys what he achieves away from surfing events. Traveling and shooting videos, he has placed his image in countless magazines and videos, has maneuvers that he has invented named after him and has decided to take things in stride.
He only participates in some Pro Junior events in his zone; and, unlike others in his generation, he is not determined to be part of the Dream Tour, as he explained in a profile written by his main sponsor Quiksilver: “Sooner or later I’ll be part of the WQS, but I’m not in a hurry”.
Before calming down, he was one of the most renowned junior competitors on the planet and obtained the most important title in his career through the International Surfing Association in the 2006 edition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.
On Sunday, 14 May 2006, final day of the greatest junior event in the world in Maresias, Brazil, Julian destroyed the waves in a very hard final that he confronted with today’s members of the ASP World Tour, South African Jordy Smith, France’s Jeremy Flores and his fellowman Caleb R. Boquist.
Wilson scored 17.67 of possible 20, leaving Jordy Smith in second place, Boquist in third and Flores in fourth. Pleased with his win and title, he said when leaving the water: “Being the world champion is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my whole life. I am so happy. I’ve come second once before and the feeling was good, but coming first is so much better. The waves really turned on for the final and it was so intense out in the water. My tactics were to get two good scores early and put a bit of pressure on the others.”
Beginnings
Wilson was born on August 12, 1988 in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. As he says in several profiles: “I‘ve surfed since I started walking”. He comes from a family of surfers that took him to the water as soon as they could.
Having begun surfing as a child, together with the wave-rich zone where he was raised and his innate talent, this could only have resulted in one thing: Professional Surfing.
Future
Julian Wilson is predestined to belong in the ASP World Tour “sooner or later”, as said above. His ability to maneuver in small waves, to stand out in the middle ones and to command the big ones make him a sure Australian member on the elite of world surfing. It’s just a question of time.
