After a hard week of competitions, the Peruvian team obtained the 11th position out of 29 countries in the ISA World Surfing Games 2008 held in Portugal.

The Peru Dream Team, formed by Gabriel Villarán, Gabriel Aramburu, Matías Mulanovich, Sebastián Alarcón, Karen Gamarra, Analí Goméz, Benoit Clemente, Jorge Hurtado, Luis Fung and María Alejandra Chávez, did their best to be in the final, but the tough competition and the waves kept them from their goal.

Still, they obtained important positions and vital points for Peruvian Team.
The individual positions were:

Last November 3, the best female surfers arrived at the north of Peru to compete in the sixth stage of the World Championship Tour.

In this event, Sofía Mulanovich fought for the cup and to stay in first place on the World ranking. Unfortunately, our dear “Sofi” had an ankle injury from the last event. This made things complicated for her to win and placed her 5th.

With the final results, Sofia lost the first place on the ranking; Australian Stephanie Gilmore recovered that position. Two events remain before knowing who will be the next World Champion.

ISA new member
The International Surfing Association (ISA) held elections, during the BGM at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games in Portugal, to choose two new Vice Presidents. In these elections, Peruvian Karin Sierralta, American Mike Gerard, Hawaiian Maile Aguerre and Canadian Barbie Major vied for a place in the ISA.

Karin Sierralta (Peru) and Mike Gerard (USA) obtained the majority votes and became 2 of the 4 ISA VPs until these seats are up for re-election in 2012.

Sierralta, also the Coach of the Peruvian Team, was surprised with the results and said, “I was hoping for Latin support, but the result was amazing. It’s a great responsibility to be in the World Governing Body for Surfing and it will be a huge motivation to express my opinions and to work for the future of surfing.”

Among other things, Sierralta plans to take the ISA World Surfing Games to more Latin countries with the idea to look for better swells, a better technical level and better judgment.
