The great Chilean promise:  Guillermo Satt

Coming from the classic waves of the Northern Chile town of Arica, 14 year old Guillermo Satt, has achieved more in his short life, than lots of surfers in an entire career. He’s been calling everybody’s attention since he was 11, after winning some national events and in free surf sessions. The young Chilean made it clear to everybody that he came to stay after he placed second at the Professional Latin Tour second stage, the Reef Classic Latin Pro Chile –February 16-18-.  Now he’s in the Top 10 on the Latin Tour current standings. The best rated youngest surfer in the history on Latin America.

Guillermo’s surfing is radical, smooth and loose. He can easily make old school maneuvers and combine them with explosive new moves. Coming from Arica, he already has a good idea of how to do it when it is big and pumping, and he also does it well when the conditions aren’t as good.

In addition to be an amazing surfer, Guillermo is a great student. A couple of months ago, the International Surfing Association –ISA- awarded him, along with five four other young surfers from around the world, the annual ISA Scholarship that aims to help the surfers doing well in school and in the water. The young Chilean star has benefited from the scholarship by improving his training and after receiving it, he received the best contest results of his entire life.

It’s going to be only a matter of time until we will see the whatīs going to be the next step of the biggest promise in the history of the Chilean Surfing.

When, how and where you started surfing?
It was in a beach called La Puntilla, in Arica. A friend of mine lent me the board and taught me. Since then I haven’t stopped surfing.

Who and what made you evolve so fast in your surfing?
It wasn’t easy; I had to fight a lot to be where I am now. My dad trains me and I also do Pilates.

At the Latin Tour stage at Chile and Ecuador you had great results, tell us a little bit about those contests.
At Reņaca -Chile- I did pretty good, placing second in the Open Pro, I was stoked. I want to thank my dad and God for that result and also for the one at Ecuador, were I placed 9th.

How were you feeling at the podium, after beating the best Latin Surfers?
Actually, when I was there I felt like a winner, I didn’t win but I was the youngest and I beat the best, so to just make it to the podium it was amazing…

A couple of months ago the ISA announced that you were one of the few to receive the ISA scholarship. How do you feel about that?
It’s great, helped a lot to pay my studies, to learn English and to train to surf better.

Your next step
I want to be the next Latin American Surfing Champion on the Open Pro division.

A message for the surfers of the world: I would like to send a message to all the surfers from Latin America: I’ve been on the tour for a short time, but I learned a lot with surfers that have a great vibe and that is something I’m really happy about.
