2008 South African Surfing Team for ISA World Surfing Games announced

The Surfing South Africa (SSA) Board of Directors has ratified the selection of the surfers, bodyboarders, longboarder and management of the 2008 South African Team which will compete in the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games at Costa Da Caparica in Portugal in October.

The Men's surf team is made up of new caps Ryan Payne (St Francis Bay), Devyn Mattheys (East London) and Klee Strachan (Winkelspruit) plus Matthew Kruger (Durban), who competed in the 2006 event, while the two Women surfers are Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) and Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand).

Defending ISA World Longboard Champion Matthew Moir (Cape Town), a multiple South African Longboard champion who won the gold medal at the biennial ISA World Games at Huntington Beach in 2006, is also in the side and will be hoping to add the 2008 title to his collection.

Sasha Specker (Camps Bay), Mark Mc Carthy (Richards Bay) and Pamela Bowren (Port Elizabeth) make up the bodyboarding contingent. The Team management are Niezaam Jappie, Mike Sheppard and Kevin Olsen.

Cyril Nel (East London) has been appointed by the ISA as one of two Head Judges for the event and Johno Hutchison (Ballito) has been included on the international judging panel appointed by the ISA.

The South African team's attendance at the event is supported by funding from the National Lottery Board.

About International Surfing Association
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, bodyboarding and surfriding. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964 and the Junior World Championships since 1980. 

ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected six times since.  The ISA's four Vice Presidents are Alan Atkins (Australia), Robin de Kock (South Africa), Maile Aguerre (Hawaii) and Mike Gerard (USA).
