Second-to-Last Stop of the Barena Professional Tour
The well-known Peruvian beer brand, Barena, has organized championships throughout this year for surfers over the age of 18. The first contest took place February 2nd and 3rd in the challenging Punta Rocas. The next stop was held on February 23rd and 24th on Punta Hermosa´s La Isla. In March the event was moved to Cerro Azul, Cañete. Next the north of Perú, Máncora, hosted a contest during the first few days of August.
Since the waves were small at this beach, the organization decided to move the contest to ‘Piscinas’ beach in the province of Lobitos. Here the conditions were favorable for all of the competitors.
After being crowned 2008 National Champion, Gabriel Villarán sought after another victory. In the Quarter Finals, Villarán scored a ten point wave and the crowd bet that this would gain him the gold. However, he had to battle against Sebastián Alarcón, Javier Swayne and Magoo de la Rosa. In the end, due to his experience and great experience on this beach, de la Rosa beat out his three opponents. Now the fight for the true title is between Magoo and Villarán. But this will not be defined until September when the final stop of the tour takes place.
On another note, in the Women’s category, Karen Mendiguetti snatched the lead from Brissa Malaga, the ranked National Champion. In Kahuna, Raul Calle won the gold while in the Grand Master Jorge Posso demonstrated once again why he made it to the finals in the World Masters. Flavio Solari and Manuel Roncalla were victorious in the Master and Junior categories, respectively.
