HIS NAME IS MCCOMB, TAMAROA MCCOMB

For some years now, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships have been placing under the spotlight the next generation of first-class surfers. The list is long and rich in names and styles: Ben Dunn, Jordy Smith, Matt Wilkinson, Tonino Benson, Jefferson Silva, Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, Jadson André, Garrett Parkes, Alejo Muniz and Tamaroa McComb.

The last edition of the most important event for juniors gave right of way to Tahitian Tamaroa McComb who, in the Portuguese edition of the games, had resigned himself to second place behind Garrett Parkes. It was with this Australian that he disputed the gold medal and had previously bid for the Quiksilver´s Young Guns title.

During the third edition of the Young Guns, these two surfers struggled for a place among the featured young surfers. Peruvian athlete Cristóbal de Col also participated and finally, after a series of evaluations, the winner was the blond Australian, Parkes.

In France, McComb reached the final directly, showing great concentration during each heat. In the decisive instances, the Tahitian imposed himself before a dangerous Peterson Crisanto (Brazil), Matty Costa (Hawaii) and Ian Fontaine (France).

“I cannot explain what I feel; I’m too happy. I’m the World Champion, and that feels really good!” he exclaimed. When asked about his strategy, McComb commented: “I simply went there and tried to find my two waves quickly, and then kept myself near Crisanto”, he told the press after receiving the championship crown.

In December 2007, Billabong ensured the presence of Tamaroa on their team. When signing the contract, Luke Egan, Billabong marketing manager, said the following: “Tamaroa is one of the most talented juniors, and one of the Tahitians with greater international renown. Billabong will give him all the necessary support to guarantee a good development to his incredible potential”.

Besides the world champion title, McComb has in his showcase the following achievements: King of the Groms 2007, Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior 2008, and Community Project Trials Gold Coast 2008.

This regular footer is the August ISA Star, his name is McComb…Tamaroa McComb.
