National Tour
80 surfers from around the country turned out to participate in the Netanya leg of the National Tour. With the sun shining and some decent waves, the surfers were geared up to show off their talents and compete for a spot in the final.
Colorful banners waving, party music in the background and a large crowd of spectators made a summer carnival atmosphere. Aviv Vakhnin from Herzliya won the Open. Aviv is no newcomer to the Tour and has already been local champion in previous years. He is leading this year’s Tour as well but has strong competition creeping up not far behind in the form of Yoni Yedid also from Herzliya. The two of them grew up surfing together and they are best of friends until it comes time for sharing out the points then it is each to his own.
The youngsters were also hungry to compete and the under 16 category saw a tough battle between Yoni Saadon and Ben Reuveni. Yoni won out over Ben – this time.
The girls also turned out in full and the Israel Surfing Association is intent on promoting Women surfing and providing as much support as possible and to encouraging as many women as possible to take up the sport.
Elections to select new committee
At a recent meeting attended by members of the association, a decision was made to elect a new committee. Elections will take place on September 4 under the auspices of Ayelet which is the umbrella organization for non-olympic sport in Israel.
