Monyca Byrne-Wickey
Hawaii
Monyca Byrne-Wickey is an 18 year old surfer from the small, rural Hawaiian town of Hana. This unique community is located in the rain forest, on the eastern coast of Maui, known as its last undeveloped tropical paradise.
Monyca is sponsored by Nike 6.0 Team, Billabong Girls , Von Zipper Sun Glasses, Vertra Sun Protection, and Kazuma Boards.
At age 14, Monyca was the only girl in the country chosen to be one of the original six athletes to launch Nike 6.0, Nike's brand of shoes, watches, and clothing for kids engaged in extreme sports.
Monyca maintains excellent grades and is dedicated to her hula halau, dancing regularly at the local hotel and performing whenever asked at various community functions. Through her devotion to hula and surfing, she has developed a deep regard for the Hawaiian culture, both ancient and contemporary.
At 15, Monyca was seen in Nike's 60 second television commercial launching the Air Max 360 along with many of Nike's A-list athletes including A-Rod, Mira Shirapova, Justin Gatlin, hurdler Liu Xiang, Pat Brady, Joan Benoit, Amare Stoudamire, Katlin Sandeno, and others. The commercial aired during the Super Bowl.
She's been on quite a roll this past year, having recently won the O'Neil/Local Motion Surf Into Summer contest at Sandy Beach, Oahu, Sandy Beach; the 17th annual Hi-Tech/Split/Lopez Surfbash at Maui's Hookipa Beach Park Ho'okipa; and, most recently, the 2007 Maui Surf Ohana's Legends of The Bay at Kapalua.
Monyca has represented Hawaii for the last 2 years in the Quiksilver World Junior Pro Contests. She was awarded Performer of The Day for her performance in the Semi-final heats at last year's competition in Brazil. This summer Monyca traveled to Portugal to compete in the event.
Monyca was recently featured on an episode of Fuel TV's "New Pollution".
Monyca also recently received honours in the woodworking category in the 28th Maui Technology Education Fair having crafted a beautiful Koa wood croquet mallet. This qualified her for the Hawaii State Technology & Industrial Arts Fair in Honolulu, where she finished second in Wood Turning for creating a finely crafted coffee table.
