Peru among the top 10 of the world
Twelve young promising Peruvian surfers, with two coaches, travelled to France last month to participate in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2008.

The Peruvian team was formed by: Piero Deluccchi, Sebastián Ríos, Alessandro Luis and Nicolás Nugent in the Under 18 division; Mario Almeida, Cristóbal de Col, Carlos Mario Zapata and Miguel Tudela in the Under 16 and Nadja de Col, Mariangela Zapata, Valeria Solé and Alexia Jerí in the Girls Under 18.

The team went to France with a clear goal: to put themselves among the 10 best countries out of 30. They achieved their goal. Peru obtained the ninth position, the best among the Spanish speaking countries.
Even though some of our juniors were inexperienced in international competitions, they showed the same great level that the surfers with more experience showed. They all proved that Peruvian surfing will be there for a while.

PERUVIAN SURFERS ABROAD:
Sebastián Alarcón, National Champion and Latin American Runner Up, was in Chile some weeks ago training hard in the freezing water of Pichilemu, in the south of the country. A few days later, he came back to Peru to get ready for a trip to United States and then to Indonesia. All these trips are part of Sebastian’s training for the next stop of the Latin Tour that will take place from July 18 to 20 in Colombia.

The young surfer, Valeria Solé, competed in the Billabong ECO Surf Festival-5 stars WQS at Praia do Forte, Bahia-Brazil. Unfortunately, she was not lucky as she obtained the fourth place on the first heat, where she competed against Paige Hareb (NZL), Thais Almeida (BRA) and Diana Cristina (BRA). However, Valeria doesn’t give up and keeps training hard for the next competitions.

Little Cristóbal de Col travelled to Singapor and, from there, to the Mentawai Islands with the DVS group, Quiksilver, Volcom and Core Magazine. Matías Mulanovich, the Brown brothers, Gilbert and Ronald, Carlos Muñoz and Jimmy Rotherham were among them.
The two time ice national champion and also Cristobal’s father, José “Titi” de Col, said that these trips are a very important part of any surfer’s physical and spiritual training so that more Peruvian surfers could become World Champions.

One of the best Peruvian photographers and cameraman, Luis Saldivar, travelled to Bali with Team Barena. Gabriel Villarán, Gonzalo “Chendo” Velasco, Javier Swayne, Gabriel Aramburú, Álvaro Malpartida, Matías Mulanovich, Jonathan Gubbins and Joaquín Castañeto gathered together and decided to make a story in those waves with Luis. There is no doubt this is going to be an incredible video with amazing shots of the best Peruvian boarders.

Juninho Urcia, is one of the five protagonists in the first film produced by the International Surfing Association (ISA). "For a Better Future” tells the story of five young surfers that received awards from the ISA Individual Scholarship Program 2007.
