Professional surfers from around the region are getting ready to take the trek to Jamaica in July for the second staging of the annual “MAKKA PRO” surf contest which is scheduled for the 18th-20th of July 2008. The event which will be held at the Makka Surfing Beach at the Yallahs community of South Haven in Saint Thomas is the third stop on the Caribbean Surf Network’s 4 event regional series which sees competition in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados.
Trinidad’s National Champion Jason Apparicio nabbed the top spot in Yallahs last year and will be returning to defend his title. Jamaican, Icah Wilmot, who finished 3rd last year, will be looking to claim the event as his this time around. He will have his work cut out for him though as strong challenges will come from last year’s runner up Chris Dennis, also of the twin island republic, and Bajan Adrian Small who finished 4th at last year’s event will also be in the hunt for this years title.
Competition will be held in the women’s division again this year with Alexis Gordon of Barbados looking to retain the title she nabbed last year. Local girls Danielle O’Hayon and Imani Wilmot will have their own thoughts on that as they look to improve on their second and third place showings last year.
The Bodyboard division will also be contested with defending champ Alan Alleyene and runner up Paul Wilson, both of Barbados, trying to defend the 2 top spots they took last year ahead of third place finisher Jean-Luc Lotaut from Martinique.
The 2007 event, which saw registration from more than 30 competitors and had over 7,000 spectators in attendance over the weekend, is expected to attract even greater numbers this year. The South Haven Citizens Association is working with the JSA to ensure the event will run smoothly and offer many side attractions for the patrons.
The event is endorsed by the Jamaica Surfing Association, Caribbean Surf Network, Sports Development Foundation, Xtreme Sports, Quashi Surfboards, Insight, Suzuki, Jamnesia and the South Haven Citizens Association.
