Eduardo Arena: Trophy and Lifetime membership
During the second edition of the annual ISA World Masters Surfing Championship, Mr. Eduardo Arena, first President and founder of the International Surfing Federation (ISF) was named Lifetime Member of the ISA. The just introduced ISA World Masters Championship trophy was also named after him.
Arena presided over the founding of the International Surfing Federation in 1964, the first direct predecesor of the International Surfing Association. Since that year, he organized the the World Surfing Championships until 1972.
The news were announced by ISA President Fernando Aguerre, during an emotive gala ceremony at the Kontiki Surf Museum, Punta Hermosa, Peru, during the World Masters and at the Opening Ceremony of the ISA Masters the next day in Miraflores, Lima, Peru.
A moved Eduardo Arena received his award and was happy for the acknowledgement given to his several years of hard work, presiding the first international surfing organization from 1964 to 1974.
In November, 1976, in Hawaii, ISF gave way to ISA – International Surfing Association. Aguerre told the public that 1966 World Champ, Nat Young from Australia said to him: “We would not be here if it weren’t for Eduardo Arena”.
About International Surfing Association
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, bodyboarding and surfriding. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964 and the Junior World Championships since 1980.
ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected six times since. The ISA's four Vice Presidents are Alan Atkins (Australia), Robin de Kock (South Africa), Maile Aguerre (Hawaii) and Mike Gerard (USA).
