ISA World Junior Champ starts May 24
The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will start in less than 10 days at the waves of Le Penon Plage, France. This is the greatest world surfing tournament for the under 18-year-olds and will take place from May 24 to June 1. Almost 250 athletes representing more than 30 different countries are expected.
This is the first time in history that France will host the most prestigious event for young surfers worldwide. It was precisely in France that the first junior-division of the World Surfing Games was organized back in 1980. That competition was won by Tom Curren, who later would become three-time World Champion.
The following teams have guaranteed their attendance: Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Australia, United States, Jamaica, Hawaii, Ecuador, South Africa, Peru, Brazil, Barbados, Costa Rica, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal, Morocco, Venezuela, Chile, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Tahiti, Senegal, Argentina and evidently the host country, France.
This is the sixth consecutive year that the World Junior will take place. Previously, the host countries and winners were:
2003 – South Africa – Winner: Brazil
2004 – Tahiti – Winner: Australia
2005 – United States – Winner: Hawaii
2006 – Brazil – Winner: Australia
2007 – Portugal – Winner: Australia
Australia, as seen, has the lead with three of the five events won. But cards will be played again in a few days time. The local team cannot be ignored, nor the Hawaiian or the Brazilians or in fact, any of the other nations. Surfing is constantly evolving and every day we see juniors that surprise us coming from countries that are not traditional surfing nations.
The event will be broadcasted live via Internet. Go to www.isasurf.org to enjoy the best junior surfing in the world.
High quality images will be available to all press media during the championship.
