The following is the Message from the ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, presenting this year guide.
Dear Friends of Surfing around the World,
It is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2008 ISA Guide, in its new and expanded version.

The ISA Guide is our main yearly publication. It provides in one compact format, news about the surfing world, including the sport, and its environmental and humanitarian arms.
The Guide complements the much larger amount of updated information available at www.isasurf.org.

Year 2007 was the inaugural year for the ISA Scholarship, providing financial support and guidance for exemplary under 18 surfers, in need of support to further their education and surfing career.
For 2008, I’m very happy to announce the program has been expanded from 5 to 20 beneficiaries, thanks to the financial support of Billabong and the Quiksilver Foundation. Our mission of working for a better surfing future and a better World is riding a great wave of success.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) has been working towards the global promotion of surfing since its inception as ISF in 1964. The ISA has been running Surfing World Championships for over 40 years.

I am looking forward to another successful year for the ISA.  In March, the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship will take place in Punta Rocas, Peru. This was the hosting surf spot for the legendary 1965 World Surfing Championships.  The World’s best Masters surfers will compete as representatives of their national teams.

The event has been expanded to include 50 and over and Women’s divisions.  As in all ISA events, competitors compete not for prize money, but for titles, medals and the honor of representing their country.

In May, the best junior surfers in the world will participate in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, to be held in Capbreton.  Surfers will compete for the title of ISA World Junior Champion in under 18 boys and girls divisions, and under 16 boys.
Then in October, the best surfers of the world, as members of their National Surfing Teams, will compete in the ISA World Surfing Games, in Costa da Caparica, Almada, Portugal.

The ISA, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, is the world's largest surfing organization, both in terms of quantity of surfing competitions, amount of National Governing Bodies (NGB) and competitors.  In addition to a growing number of competitions, the ISA is involved in numerous development projects.

Last year, the ISA’s Adapted Surfing Committee produced Surfing for All, a complimentary DVD geared towards teaching people about Adapted Surfing and the benefits of incorporating people with disabilities into surfing programs.  For 2008 we plan the release of “Surfing for all” Volume 2, a comprehensive program for challenged surfers. We also plan the release of “For a better surfing future” a movie featuring the five recipients of the 2007 ISA Scholarships.

On behalf of the ISA Executive Committee Members, Alan Atkins (Australia), Robin de Kock (South Africa), Maile Aguerre (Hawaii), Mike Gerard (USA) and the ISA staff I hope you enjoy the Guide 2008.

Un fuerte abrazo,

Fernando Aguerre
President
ISA
