The second stage of the Costa Rica National Surfing Tour finished with regular conditions. The surfer from Puerto Viejo, Gilberth Brown, won the OP 3 star Trophy in the Open division. This way, he finished with Luis Vindas’ hegemony, who was the winner in the last five stages of the Surf Federation.

By midday and with waves of a regular quality, the surfers from all divisions rode their final heats. In the Open division, Gilberth Brown, Jason Torres, Diego Naranjo and Jairo Pérez fought for first place.

Costa Rican international representative in the WQS tour, Federico Pilurzu, participated in the event, but he was beaten in the semifinals where he competed against Jason Torres and Diego Naranjo.

Luis Vindas was also beaten in the semifinals but this time by Gilberth Brown and Jairo Pérez.

Federico Pilurzu and Gilbert Brown competed like old friends to see who got a better position in the second stage and Pilurzu lost his bet this time.

After the match a rumor was spread: Pilurzu would compete in the third stage of the National Tour that will take place on February 2-3 in Tamarindo Beach. The rumor was finally confirmed and it’s expected to see a Pilurzu’s even better performance due to the fact that he is the local surfer there.

German Myre, who hasn’t participated in this second stage (he was participating in the first stage of the Latin tour in Argentina), will be in Tamarindo to defend his title.

The boys under 18 for the OP Trophy were: Jairo Pérez, Carlos Muñoz, Ariel Agüero and Jefferson Tascon. They had a hard-fought final. But the experienced Jairo Perez became the best Costa Rican Junior as he won for the second time in this tour.

Ladies
The Argentinian surfer Laura Pecoraro, who has lived in Costa Rica for a long time now, came back to the national tour and took the title from Nataly Bernold’s and Lisbeth Vindas’ hands, who have been winning for a long time. Pecoraro was first, Vindas was second, third was Bernold and Mariana Samudio –Germaine Myrie’s wife- was fourth.

Grommets division’s final (under 14) was one of the most interesting moments of the event. The participants enjoyed the best waves of the event, between 3 and 5 feet tall, and sets of 11 seconds or more.

Anthony Fillingam, Tomas King, Josué Rodríguez and Normar McGonagle were the surfers that made the crowd shout. Anthony Fillingam won the competition.

This was a very important occasion for the technical crew that will select the members of the national team for the next Central American championship. This event will take place in Panama next March, and the national team will defend the two titles of the Isthmus.

Nevertheless, the next stages in Tamarindo and Nosara on February will also be vital for the selection of the Costa Rican national team.

“I want to point out the Open finalists of this competition. Diego, Jason, Jairo and Gilbert did a great a job to be on the final as they beat big surfers like Luis Vindas and Federico Pilurzu. They showed great talent and courage”, said José Ureña, the President of the Federation.

Miss Surf
Once the competition has finished, the most beautiful girls of the place walked through the runway for the crowd that was watching them from the beach.

Backyard Hotel prepared a special infrastructure for the Sunset Party that all the participants could enjoy.

Miss Surf Organic and Natural winner was Guadalupe Solis (19 years old) who lived in Jaco. She will be on the final of this celebration that will take place next April with the National Tour’s final in Terrazas del Pacifico, Reef Cup 6 stars.

“At first I decided to participate in the event to think about something different but then I got thrilled and I wanted to win. Now that I know I’m on Miss Surf’s final I’m very excited”, said the young lady.

That’s how the OP 3 stars Trophy came to an end with a lot of people in Hermosa Beach. The next stage in Tamarindo the Surf Federation is expecting more than 250 surfers for the competition.
