A 2008 for everyone by the ISA

The International Surfing Association (ISA) announced its calendar of competitions for 2008. It includes events for athletes under 16 years old up to surfers over 50 years old, including the World Surfing Games, with the current biggest professional surfing stars, surfing as members of their National Surfing Teams, just like in the Olympic “dream” teams.

The ISA will organize three major events this next year that will gather the best surfers from more than 50 surfing nations around the world.

From March 28 to April 6 the ISA World Master Surfing Championship will take place in Punta Rocas, Peru.
The best surfers over 35 years old will face up to the classic Peruvian rights.
The new world champions from Master division, over 35, Grand Masters division, over 40, Kahunas, over 45, Grand Kahunas, over 50, and Ladies Masters, over 35 will be crowned.

South Africa will defend its World Champion Team title, won in Puerto Rico in January 2007.

Almost two months later, in the charming beaches of Capbreton, France the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will be held May 24 to June 1.
The best under 18 years surfers, both girls and boys, will be seen there competing for the world championship. Australia will be defending its World Team Champion title, won in Portugal in May 2007. Previous ISA Jr. champions include Stephanie Gilmore and Jordy Smith.

Then, from October 11th to the 19th, top men, women, bodyboarders and longboarders from all parts of the world will compete in the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games in Portugal. This event, also known as the “Olympics” of Surfing, will determine the best surfing nation of the world. Australia will also be defending its World Champion title, won in the USA in 2006.

While Australia has been on top in the last ISA events, new powers have emerged in the last few years. Joining Australia, United States, Hawaii and Brazil at the very top, are South Africa, France, Portugal, Peru, Costa Rica...

Who will rule in 2008? Who will be able to dethrone Australia? We will have to stay tuned, and log in to the webcasts of the events to find out.
