The ISA received applications from 20 different countries for the 2008 ISA Individual Scholarship Program where twenty $1,200 scholarships will be awarded. The Individual Scholarship Program's main objective is to provide financial support in order to facilitate an experience in surfing while encouraging the importance of education.
Applications were received from the following countries: Peru, Japan, Canada, Ecuador, Spain, Barbados, Bulgaria, Argentina, Guatemala, South Africa, Costa Rica, Chile, Great Britain, Holland, Colombia, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, United States and Uruguay.
The ISA Scholarship Selection Subcommittee, which includes ISA Executive Committee members, will evaluate the applications. Applicants submitted school report cards, letters of recommendation and personal essays, among other requirements. The scholarship is aimed at inspirational Junior surfers who are committed to improving their surfing and education.
The ISA Individual Scholarship Program debuted in 2007 where five scholarships were granted to the following surfers: Lungani Memani from South Africa, Imani Wilmot from Jamaica, Diego Vargas from Ecuador, Juninho Urcia from Peru and Guillermo Satt from Chile.
All of the scholarship recipients remained committed to their education and had excellent results in 2007.
Lungani earned a place on the South African Surf Team for the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, Imani made it to the finals in the Caribbean Cup, Diego Vargas became Ecuadorian Junior National Champion and Open runner up, Juninho Urcia was Chilean National Champion in the Under 12 division and Guillermo Satt became the youngest surfer ever to get into the final of the Latin American Professional Surfing Tour, the Reef Classic Latin Pro Chile, placing second.
For 2008, the ISA has partnered with Quiksilver Foundation, Billabong and Reef Redemption.
These brands left behind their competitive interests in the market, for a better cause and are why the ISA Individual Scholarship Program has increased 400% for 2008.
The 20 recipients will be announced by mid January.
