The British Bodyboarding Championships kicked off at the end of September, with entrants traveling from Jersey, Bournemouth, Wales, Devon and throughout Cornwall to take part in the contest. However, dying swell forced the British Surfing Association to postpone the final day until last Saturday (3rd November).

With GB selection points up for grabs, not to mention the prestigious national titles, tension was high as the remaining competitors re-gathered at Porthtowan in Cornwall. The sight of clean, rippable 3 ft waves therefore came as a big relief.

The Under 14’s hit the water early on, with Dan Garton from Jersey just pipping Ed Hone to take the title. In the Under 16’s, Luke Brabyn tamed the lefts with some tight spins and roll combos, edging Bournemouth’s Nathan McCabe into second. Joe Hone was the stand out in the Under 18’s division back in September, but this time around it was Jersey’s David Speller who shone, showing a cool head to take the title.

Mid way through the women’s final, Lauren Musgrave dropped in on favourite Gemma Harris, earning a penalty that effectively ruled her out of contention. Clemmie Hardie ignored all the commotion and pulled off some impressive reverses to take a shock victory, albeit by a tight margin.

Newquay’s Rob Barber announced his retirement from competition at this event, and he ended his 15 year competitive career on a high with a convincing win over old rival Danny Catten in the Seniors.

The much anticipated Open final saw Damien Prisk hit his best small wave form for years. He only caught three waves during the twenty minute final, but selected wisely. On one of his waves he stacked up 14 separate moves; three rolls, a cuttie reverse and a stack of other spins.
Darren Halse answered back with a critical down the line roll, but he couldn’t match Prisk’s rail riding and panache. Mark Griffiths put in a solid performance with a range of spins and power rolls to take third, with Alex Winkworth, unlucky with the waves, taking fourth.

Karen Walton, National Director of the British Surfing Association said, “The level of riding during the competition was just outstanding. It was a shame that we had to postpone the finals, but we want our events to be about exciting surfing, and I think the wait paid off.

Well done to Damien and a massive thank you to the generous sponsors including Rich Hall for organising the event, the title sponsor Smith & Williamson Solomon Hare, The Blue Bar for supplying the HQ for the event and the individual division sponsors for supplying financial prizes for each of the finalists.
Product prizes were also supplied by Headworx, Prone, Undaground, PF2 fins, Pod leashes, padded board bags and travel bags.”
