Busy month for Surfing Australia
If there´s
someone in the surfing world having some busy months, it has to be
Surfing Australia and all the contest organizers that have the entire
world taking a look at what’s going on at all the championships that
since January and until April will be held along the beautiful Oz coast.
This years first Australian leg event, was the Roxy Women’s Surfing
Festival, that took place at Victoria´s Phillip Island in January, and
had local young star, Stephanie Gilmore, starting the year in great
form, winning the 5 stars WQS.
Then, the circus moved north, to the amazing Snapper Rocks waves, where
we saw locals Mick Fanning and Chelsea Georgeson-Hedges clinching the
first WCT trophy in a contest that was held in perfect, long barreling
conditions.
Five days after the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro were over, the Maitland
Toyota Open was starting at the fun waves of Merewether, Newcastle.
Aussie Jay Thompson won the 4 stars WQS event, while Brazilian Silvana
Lima won the 5 stars women WQS event.
The Maitland Toyota Open ended on March 18th, and on the 19th the action
was starting at Soldiers beach for the Hot Tuna Central Coast Pro. A 4
stars Men WQS and a 2 stars Women WQS is being held right now.
All the surfers will be moving west once the Hot Tuna Central Coast Pro
is over, the Drug Aware Pro Margaret River Presented by O´Neill will be
starting only one day after at the legendary Margaret River waves on
West Australia. It is going to be the only 6 stars WQS for men and women
of the entire Aussie leg.
The second 2007 WCT event, the sport´s longest-running pro contest, Rip
Curl Pro Easter Classic, will take place at legendary Victoria´s Bells
Beach, with a waiting period that will start on April 3rd, ending on the
13th. It will be also a Men’s and Women’s event.
During the Rip Curl waiting period, a couple thousand miles away at
Queensland, Sunshine Coast, the Billabong Girls Eastern Surf Festival, a
1 star women WQS will take place.
With this, almost three entire months of contest, will be delivering
precious points for the ASP World Tour and a total of 1.130.000 dollars
in cash prizes are going to be delivered for the world best surfers.
