Giorgi Acosta Looking for a Second Title

The second phase of the 2007 USU Patricia Beer Union Surf Circuit took
place from February 17-20 at the waves of Montoya beach in Barra de
Maldonado. Giorgi Acosta, born at Punta del Diablo, was the winner of
the Open category and now appears at the top of the ranking, which
belonged to the surfer from Punta del Este, Luisma Iturria.
The organizers of the event did well in waiting four more days for
better waves, since during the first days of the event neither the waves
nor the climate conditions were adequate for carrying out the
championship.
During the third day, the wind started to come from offshore, the waves
became smooth and some good tubes began to appear. This allowed the best
Uruguayan surfers to struggle in a fair way to reach the national title.
At 6 pm of Tuesday, February 20, the championship reached its decision
with a very hard-fought final between the 2006 Uruguayan Champion,
Giorgi Acosta, and Diego Umpierrez, Sebastián Bistancic, Santiago
Capozzoli and Fernando Antía. Acosta showed once again why he is the
defending champion and came in first. Umpierrez, Bistancic, Capozzoli
and Antía were second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.
The winner in the Junior category was Santiago Madrid, while Antonio
Pita placed himself in line for gaining the National Longboard
Championship for the fifth consecutive time. Diego Furiatti was the
winner in the Bodyboard category. Martina Lorente won in the Ladies
category, Matías Sosa in the cadets and Ignacio Baru in the Boys class.
The third and last phase of the 2007 USU Patricia Beer Union Surf
Circuit will be carried out during Easter week at La Paloma beach.
