Christian Merello won the Puertecillo Classic in amazing conditions
With one of the
best left-hand waves in the world breaking epically, with 4 to 6-feet
tubular waves, the sixth phase of the Chilean Surfing Circuit – the
Puentecillo Classic - took place, a two-star event for the Chilean
ranking. Christian Merello, taking advantage of his radical surfing, was
the great champion of the event.
It was carried out from March 7-11 and all those days the waves broke
perfectly. So perfect that the best, pre-classified seeds, who
supposedly would get into the water after the first two heats, begged
the organizers to let them run the first heat, forgetting about the
seeding system.
The final crash was between known surfers: Diego Medina, Ramón Medina,
Edwin del Río and Merello himself. They exchanged the lead several times
after plenty of excellent waves, but in the end, Merello was awarded the
championship title. Ramón Navarrro came in second, and Diego Medina and
Edwin del Río occupied the third and fourth places respectively.
In the Ladies category, the clash was between this championship’s
eternal rivals: Mariane Lombardi and Jessica Anderson. The latter surfed
best at the finals and obtained the contest title.
Maxi “El Duende” Cross de Reñaca was the Junior champion while Renato
“Pelecho” Aguirre won the Masters title with a comfortable lead.
The next phase of the Chilean Surfing Circuit will take place at the
classical waves of Punta Lobos, where the Punta Lobos Ceremonial Classic
will also take place. This is a four-star event that will celebrate its
10th anniversary. The waiting period for the best waves begins on the
last days of March.
