Siri was the great champion of the fifth phase of the Argentinean
Surfing Circuit, the Abracadabra Challenger, in memory of Micky Arandía,
which took place at the waves of the Abracadabra beach bar. The event
had a waiting period and the best waves happened on Sundays, March 4 and
11. With this result and one single event away from the circuit’s
termination, Siri reinforces his aspirations of obtaining the third
Argentinean surf title, although Lucas Santamaría is closing in on him.
The event was described by ASA as the most emotive and awaited for, not
only because of the good waves, all above four feet, but because it was
organized in memory of a very dearly liked figure of Mar del Plata,
Micky Arandía, an important surfing pioneer in Argentina.
The eliminatory phases took place on March 4 in up to 6-feet waves. Then
it was decided to wait for the next wave tide that did not take long to
come, since on March 11 with winds coming from the northwest and
3-4-feet waves, the semifinals and finals of the three most important
categories were held.
Juan Manuel Arca stood out as the best Junior and was crowned champion
in that category. He showed his surfing power by reaching the Open
semifinals. Among the Ladies, the surprise came by way of Maria Paz
Usuna, the smallest of them all, that reached the final and was placed
second, since she couldn’t compete with Rosario Rillo’s intelligence.
The later took the best wave of the heat and was crowned champion.
The most awaited finals had Lucas Santamaría, Martín Passeri, Marcelo
Rodríguez and Maxi Siri as leading characters. Not only the event’s
title was in play but also the Argentinean title. Lucas Santamaría had
the possibility of winning it in anticipation should he win the clash.
Santamaría surfed solidly and led almost all the time. With two minutes
remaining, Siri appeared with a secret weapon and turned the result
around, after making a radical floater and a strong off-the-lip in a
good left-hand wave. With this result, the Argentinean title will be
defined in the circuit’s next and final event.
Soon after exiting the water, Siri commented: “I am very happy to have
reached this regularity in competitions, something that you always dream
of as a sportsman, and luckily it happened to me this year. Although I
now rank first, there’s still another date to come, and competition is
quite hard. The title will be defined at the Easter Quiksilver Pro, and
this is an occasion that represents a lot to all the Argentinean
surfers. Because it is a classic, everyone wants to win”.
At the end, prizes were distributed at the beach, and Micky was
remembered and honored by all those present. The champion won the Micky
Arandía Cup.
