The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle will see some of NSW’s best boardriders clubs hit Wollongong for the southern NSW qualifying event this weekend.
Over 12 of NSW’s most talented boardriding clubs, south of the Hawkesbury River, will battle it out in an attempt to qualify for the National Final, which will take place on Australia Day at Cronulla.
Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon expects to see the same high calibre of surfing that we saw at the northern NSW qualifying event which took place at Forster in October last year.
“During the first NSW qualifying event we saw some mind-blowing performances and we expect that all the boardriding clubs from southern NSW will produce a similar calibre this weekend at Wollongong,” said Windon.
“Boardriding clubs have always provided aspiring surfers with the perfect competitive pathway to achieve their dreams. I don’t think there would be one Australian World Champion who hasn’t cut their teeth in a local boardriding community.”
Already entered into the event are World Championship Tour competitors Kai Otton (North Steyne Boardriders), Tyler Wright (Werri Boardriders) and Laura Enever (North Narrabeen Boardriders Club) as well as former World Championship Tour surfers Richie Lovett (North Steyne Boardriders), Nathan Webster (North Narrabeen Boardriders Club), Dayyan Neve (North Steyne Boardriders) and former World Champion Layne Beachley (Queenscliff Boardriders Club).
Minister for Illawarra, John Ajaka, is looking forward to seeing some of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in action this weekend.
“This event is a fantastic initiative which brings local boardriding clubs together and we are proud to host the final round in Wollongong this weekend,” said Ajaka.
“The Australian Boardriders Battle will not only benefit businesses, tourism and the local community but it provides a great opportunity for those visiting the area to explore all that the Illawarra and South Coast have to offer.”
The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, secured two qualifying events for NSW, in Forster and Wollongong on January 11 – 12, 2014. NSW also secured the national final in Cronulla on January 25 – 26.
The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle also includes a Monster Raffle giveaway with one lucky ticket holder to drive away in a new Toyota RAV4. Other prizes include a Billabong pack valued at more than $1500 and a Nikon 1 AW1 camera valued at up to $1000. The Monster Raffle is open to all Surfing Australia affiliated boardrider clubs with proceeds returning to the boardriders club community.
In a further incentive to the clubs that make the National Final, the four junior female surfers from the four highest placed clubs will be invited to be part of the Surfing Australia documentary Wildcard.
Wildcard is a one hour documentary following the four female surfers as they are given the chance of a lifetime to win a wildcard spot into the Open division at the Australian Open of Surfing at Manly in February, 2014. The four will be invited to the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) for a week-long selection camp to see who will win the wildcard.
This event is supported by the Be the Influence – Tackling Binge Drinking initiative, part of the Australian Government’s National Binge Drinking Strategy addressing youth binge drinking and raising awareness of the long and short term impacts of harmful drinking among young people through sport sponsorships and other activities.
The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle is proudly supported by Be the Influence – Tackling Binge Drinking, Billabong, Toyota, Nikon, Surfing Australia, Surfing NSW, Destination NSW, the Association of Surfing Professionals and Milwaukee.
