Final Wrap Up of the Covelong Point Classic Surf Contest in India

Surfing Federation of India in association with Covelong Point surfing school held second edition of national surf contest at Covelong Point, Chennai.

More than 100 surfers from all across India descended upon this tiny fishing village of Kovalam (Covelong) near Chennai, which is the first surfing village in India, the village has produced over 40 surfers in a short period of time.

The swell forecast was true to it’s prediction and surfers had an amazing swell to showcase their skills with plenty of barrels and glassy waves to shred. The level of competitiveness in surfing as grown leaps and bounds in couple of years and it was evident at the contest.

The event had plenty to offer other than just surfing with yoga, live music and food. The event saw a huge crowd of family, youth, children, media and host of important people attending 3 days of extravaganza.

The event had various categories for different age groups: Groms (Under 16), Juniors (17 – 22), Seniors (22-28) Masters (Above 28). There was also an open category for international surfers.

Surfing Federation of India roped in certified ISA judges from Bali, Indonesia. The Judges were very excited to see the surfing skills put on display by Indian surfers. The federation as been very successful in promoting surfing in India and is hoping to make surfing a very popular water sport activity. SFI is also planning to hold many educational programs for surfers, instructors and aspiring judges by next year.
