11 October 2014, Gianyar-Bali: West Java’s Dede Suryana earned his first ever ASP WQS victory today at the inaugural Komune Bali Pro presented by the Mad Hueys, taking on and besting ex-ASP WCT’er Dean “Dingo” Morrison in the 35 minute man-on-man finale in what has been billed as “the biggest 1-star QS ever” at Keramas, Bali.
Yesterday Suryana took down 3-time and current ASC Champion Raditya Rondi from Kuta in the quarterfinals, fresh off the news that his wife in Java had just given birth to their first baby, a girl. This morning, on his 29th birthday, he went on to take down Australian Mitch Parkinson (cousin of Joel Parkinson) in his semifinal heat and advance to meet Dean Morrison in the final.
Suryana is now the second Indonesian surfer ever to win an ASP WQS event, the first being Rizal Tandjung back in 1997, who won the Dompu Open at Lakey Peak.
Back on the beach, when asked for his thoughts on his win, Suryana replied, “I just want to get home and see my new daughter Asanda! And give my wife a kiss.”
He added, “I’m so happy for the support of my sponsors like Quiksilver, Luke Studer, Camden, and my family and friends, so I can compete…I know they were all watching the webcast and going crazy at home coz I won. I was competing on the QS for two years and never won, so this is extra sweet to be winning in my home country and at a world class wave like Keramas.”

When asked what was the key to his win, he replied, “At first I was nervous because there were so many good surfers here, even though it is only a 1 star it’s at a wave that everybody wants to surf, so I wasn’t that confident. But after I got the news that my wife had the baby and she was all normal and everything, I just relaxed and enjoyed the waves. Winning is the best birthday present I could imagine!”
Dean Morrison was all smiles too, stoked to be here in Bali and ending up in the final.
“It was an amazing event,” said Morrison. “I grew up with the Hazza’s (nickname for the Harrington’s who started the Mad Huey’s), and I never would have thought they would be having an ASP event like this, so I’m stoked to be here and to surf in it. It’s been a really fun week, and congratulations to Dede for winning it!”
